The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Pitt-Johnstown is an interdisciplinary, science-oriented major that prepares students for a wide range of jobs in the environmental sector. The curriculum exposes students to an array of scientific disciplines throuhg diverse coursework, including hands-on, laboratory- and field-based studies. The major has several concentrations aimed to prepare students in fields such as environmental consulting, soil science, and surface water resources. These concentrations will qualify students to pursue certifications in their chosen fields.
Environmental Professional Concentration: This concentration prepares students for a career in pollution assessment and remediation in the environmental consulting fields whether in the private sector or for a regulatory agency (e.g., PA DEP or US EPA). Completed curriculum would qualify graduates to sit for the Professional Geologist licensure exam.
Soil Science Concentration: This concentration provides students with appropriate preparation for careers in soil science. Completed coursework qualifies graduates to pursue federal and state Soil Scientist positions and certification as a Professional Soil Scientists.
Surface Water Resources Concentration: This concentration prepares students for careers related to delineation, restoration, and mitigation of water resources (e.g., groundwater, streams, wetlands, etc.). Graduates can seek employment in a wide-range of fields including, but not limited to, meteorology, ecosystems, hydrogeology, water quality/chemistry, and flood hazard mitigation.
