MUSIC 0712 - JAZZ

This course examines the development of jazz from its early roots in late 19th century African American popular music to its evolution to the present. Special attention will be given to pivotal figures in the history of jazz such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and contemporary artists. Class time will be spent listening to, analyzing, and discussing a wide variety of recorded jazz performances. The course objective is to increase student’s understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of this great American art form, as well as sharpening listening skills and the ability to communicate clearly and intelligently about music.
