PHIL 0480 - AI ETHICS

This course will introduce students to the major ethical theories of the last 300 years so that they will be familiar with arguments pro and con in support of or criticism of each. These theories are Kantianism (deontology), Utilitarianism, Emotivism, and Agapism. Some attention will also be paid to virtue ethics. Advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed then examined for potential application to solving some major ethical and legal problems posed by use and development of large language model AI. The philosophy of mind will also be discussed without a background in which one cannot understand how ethics could be possible or not in a device that supposedly mirrors human intelligence. Specifically, the possibility of consciousness in such systems will be discussed and the effect that could have on programming ethics into systems like self-driving cars. Ethical problems relating to AI will be discussed making use of news articles, movies, and Youtube videos on the subject.
