CRIM 0644 - INVESTIGATIVE DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

This course introduces theories and methodologies for the study of human discourse, or language in use. Discourse history, assumptions and principles, verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as society and culture's roles in a variety of discourse genres are discussed. Opportunities to analyze both spoken and written discourse are offered. The focus of this course is to enhance communication knowledge and analytical thinking. Students will engage in a hands-on learning experience. Students will use actual statements, transcripts and letters to provide insight into the human thought process, identifying critical areas that merit further investigation. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated an ability to analyze and evaluate complex issues or problems, draw reasoned conclusions and/or generate solutions, and effectively communicate their results. Students will have demonstrated an ability to critically examine and comprehend human nature and behavior, social traditions, and institutions.
