CRIM 0253 - JUVENILE LAW

This course is designed to provide you with a general introduction to the study of juvenile justice. It will begin with an overview of the nature and extent of delinquency including theories of crime causation, which attempt to provide an explanation relevant to juvenile criminal involvement. You will learn how to interpret and apply the Juvenile Act in various scenarios presented to you. You will learn laws and procedures applied to juvenile delinquency as well as those applied to juvenile dependency. You will study the laws in Title 18 Pennsylvania Crimes Code that apply to crimes that only apply to juvenile offenders as well as crimes with specific characteristics and enhanced penalties when perpetrated against a juvenile. You will learn case law that is specific to juveniles, the special handling of juveniles, and the use of restorative justice in the juvenile system; you will also gain an understanding of the procedures to transfer a juvenile to the adult court. Further, the course will focus on the prevention and social control of delinquency as it pertains to law enforcement, courts, and corrections in the United States. Finally, the course will devote discussion to both global issues and the future of juvenile justice.
