CRIM 0146 - CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 A crime has occurred. Now what? From the crime scene to the courtroom, Criminal Investigation walks students through the entire investigative process and the roles involved, including police officers, investigators, forensic personnel, defense lawyers, and prosecutors. This integrated approach paints a realistic picture of how crimes are actually solved with fascinating real-world examples. The course is designed to give Criminal Justice majors and minors an introduction to the concepts and institutions that comprise our system of justice. It is to acquaint students with the historical and philosophical foundations and the organization and processes of the agencies that conduct criminal investigations. The course will provide Criminal Justice majors with fundamental knowledge of criminal investigations and a more thorough understanding of police patrol investigations, legal requirements regarding criminal investigations and their relationships to our society and its citizens. Students will write police reports, search warrants and arrest warrants; they will gain knowledge of sketching and recreating a crime scene. The course includes extensive concentration in our constitutional process, such as requirements for search warrants and exclusionary rule as well as other investigative protocol. Students will learn the complexities of specific types of investigations from homicide to arson and sex crimes. Students will also gain insight into how and why wrongful convictions occur.
