BIOL 1227 - EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY LABMinimum Credits: 1 Maximum Credits: 1 The goal of this proposal is to formally offer Exercise Physiology and Lab for students with career interests in sports medicine, physical therapy, and athletic training. This is a required course for several prominent graduate schools in the area and a recommended course for many others (including Pitt DPT). For several years, we have used BIOL1200 Independent Study and BIOL1280 Special Topics to cover this requirement for our students. This has been problematic in terms of showing pre-requisites are met because of how this shows on the students' transcripts and in terms of assigning load as Dr. Bonachea does not get credit for the course when offered as Independent Study. This lecture course will replace the Special Topics (BIOL1280) version of the same course so there will be no impact on Dr. Bonachea's teaching load from that. The proposed lab course will use the same format as the BIOL1200 version; the course will be taught as an online, self-guided tutorial using virtual labs. This has been deemed acceptable by Slippery Rock and St. Francis DPT in the past. Based on historical numbers, we anticipate enrollment in the lab will be low as only two programs in the area require a lab with the course. We are asking that the teaching load for the lab be assigned as no contact hours if less than 5 students a term and 1 contact hour for 5 or more students. In semesters where the lab is popular, we may need one credit of overload on Dr. Bonachea's teaching load. We hope that this is an adequate compromise for being able to run this lab for students that do actually need it even when the enrollment numbers are too low to justify the teaching load.
